Accepted Answer

Yes — most South East Melbourne emergency callouts (Berwick, Cranbourne, Narre Warren, Hampton Park, Endeavour Hills, Officer, Beaconsfield, Pakenham) we're on site within 2–4 hours of the call. Indicative call-out plus repair: thermostat replacement $200–$350, electric element replacement $250–$400, anode rod replacement $250–$400, pilot light assembly / thermocouple $200–$350, tempering valve $250–$400, expansion control valve $200–$350, pressure relief valve $200–$350, heat-pump compressor circuit board $400–$800. Most repairs we complete in the same visit with stock from the van. If the cylinder itself is leaking, repair isn't an option — we'll quote replacement and book the install.

Water around the base of my hot water unit — what does it mean?

Three possibilities, in order from cheapest to most expensive to fix: (1) the pressure/temperature relief valve is dripping into the tundish — this is normal expansion and only signals a fault if it's continuous; usually a $200 valve swap fixes it. (2) A water connection at the top of the tank is leaking — often just a loose fitting, $150–$300. (3) The cylinder itself has rusted through and is leaking — the unit is finished, replacement is the only option. Tell-tale: (1) drips visibly through the relief drain, (2) leaks from above the tank, (3) puddle steady underneath even after wiping dry. Send us a photo of where the water is coming from before the callout and we usually know which it is.

My hot water is lukewarm — what's wrong?

Three common causes: (1) tempering valve failure — delivers tepid water no matter what; replace the valve $250–$400. (2) thermostat set too low or partially failed — adjust or replace $200–$350. (3) sediment build-up in the bottom of the tank reducing efficient heating — flush the tank ($150–$250) or, on older tanks, time to replace. (4) on gas instantaneous: the unit is undersized for your simultaneous demand (washing while showering = lukewarm) — sizing issue, not a fault, sometimes solved by reducing tap flow or installing a larger unit. We diagnose which on the call.

Do you repair all brands?

Yes — Rinnai, Bosch, Rheem, Dux, Aquamax, Vulcan, Aquaheat, Apricus, Edwards, Solahart, Sanden, Reclaim, Stiebel Eltron, iStore, Quantum, Saxon, Hocking, and most others. Parts availability is excellent for the major Australian brands (Rinnai, Bosch, Rheem). Heat-pump parts (compressors, control boards) can take 1–3 days to source on less-common brands — we'll lock in the call and return when parts land.

When does repair stop making sense and replacement start?

Accepted Answer

Honest rules of thumb. Repair: unit is under 10 years old AND the cylinder is sound (no leak) AND the parts to repair cost under 25% of replacement. Replace: unit is over 12 years old, OR the cylinder is leaking, OR repair cost is over 50% of replacement, OR you've already replaced 2+ components in the last 2 years. The grey zone (10–12 years, mid-cost repair) is your call — we lay out the options honestly and don't push replacement when repair is the smart play.

Do you do emergency after-hours repairs?

For genuine emergencies (water leaking into your home, gas leak suspected, no hot water on a weekend with children in the house) — yes, after-hours callout available. After-hours callout fee is $250 instead of standard $150. For 'inconvenient but not urgent' (no hot water but can wait until tomorrow morning), we book first-thing next-day at standard rate.
