Solar hot water in Berwick & the South East.
Roof-mount evacuated tubes or flat-plate panels with gas or electric boost. Apricus, Rheem Loline, Edwards, Solahart. STCs claimed and the Solar Vic rebate lodged on your behalf. Best suited to north-facing roofs in homes that want true energy self-sufficiency.
Collector and brand comparison.
Evacuated tube.
- Apricus 30-tube + 315L tank: Best winter performance, evacuated tubes hold efficiency in cold and overcast weather. Tubes replaceable individually if a stone or hail breaks one. ~$6.5K–$7.5K installed.
- Edwards Solene Titan: Premium Australian brand, robust frame, 10-year tank warranty. ~$7K–$8K.
Flat plate.
- Rheem Loline 270 / 300: Australian-made, split-system layout (tank on ground, panels on roof). Easier servicing. ~$5.5K–$6.5K.
- Rheem Premier: Close-coupled (tank on roof). Simpler but adds roof load. ~$5.5K–$6.5K.
- Solahart Streamline: The original Australian solar HW brand. Flat plate, close-coupled or split. ~$5.5K–$7K.
Boost.
Every solar hot water system needs a backup — either an inline gas booster (Rinnai Infinity 16/20 fires only when solar can’t meet demand) or an electric element in the tank on a timer. Electric boost pairs beautifully with rooftop solar PV; gas boost makes sense if you already have a strong natural gas line and a recent meter.
Is solar still the right call in 2026?
Honest comparison: after rebates, a heat-pump now lands cheaper than solar hot water for most South East Melbourne homes. The $1,000 Solar Victoria heat-pump rebate plus STCs drops a 280L heat-pump to ~$3K–$4.5K net — that’s typically $1.5K–$2.5K less than solar hot water net.
Solar hot water still wins where: (1) you have an existing solar HW system that just needs the tank or panels replaced (keep the proven layout, no boring the roof); (2) you have a perfect north-facing roof and want maximum solar self-sufficiency; (3) you already have rooftop solar PV and want electric-boosted solar HW for near-zero running cost; (4) you don’t want a heat-pump compressor humming outside.
We’ll quote both on the same call. Whichever wins for your roof and family, that’s what we install.
