Split also works on roofs where the tank wouldn't fit alongside the panels. Cost is similar.

Why does solar hot water need a boost?

Solar alone can't guarantee hot water through a week of overcast Melbourne winter weather. Every solar hot water system has either a gas booster (instantaneous gas unit on the cold-water inlet, fires only when needed) or an electric booster (element in the tank, on a timer). Gas boost is cheaper to run if you already have natural gas. Electric boost works anywhere and can be timed for off-peak or aligned with rooftop solar PV. For homes that already have solar PV, electric boost + solar hot water gives almost-free hot water year-round.
